Located on an island within Strangford Lough, this former small oyster factory was purchased by our clients with outline planning permission for a vernacular style bungalow.
Our clients are sailing enthusiasts, so the brief was to create a place that provides all the facilities for this passion; a home that makes the most of the views whilst retaining privacy.
The outdoor spaces were to be sheltered from the wind.
Bright rooms are large enough for the whole family and intimate enough for the couple.
The family now enjoy a muted, calm interior that doesn't compete with the ever-changing colours of the sky and hillsides and provides a backdrop for their art and furniture.
Careful manoeuvring of space and composition of the facades allows light in and views out, balanced with the creation of privacy within the area.
A limited pallet of finishes was selected based on their suitability for the marine location and the low maintenance qualities.
These materials have been used over the retaining wall and boat shed to create a unified intervention in the grassy slopes and terracing of the landscaping that sweeps down from the hillside behind.
Given that we've previously carried out work for this client and are aware of their expectations, we assumed the role of a contractor rather than procuring the building through traditional contracting methods.
